Chapter 209: On the warfront.

Neither side knew much about each other, there had been quite some time since the last war after all. The weather up north was rather harsh, and it was winter all year around, so the face-off between the two armies was like a test of their soldiers\' mental fortitude. The army that attacked first would be subtly admitting that they weren\'t as good as their enemies.

Since that was the case, neither side wanted to attack first.

In the commander\'s tent on the humans\' side, a strategic meeting was currently being held. The commander of this small army was a young noblewoman named Erin Ward. The Ward family was a rather prestigious noble family that hailed all the way from Geotopia. Why would a noble lady from such a noble family be all the way out here on the northern warfront you might wonder?

The reason was quite simple, she was a talented mage.

Because her talent would allow her to easily surpass her older siblings in the future, she was sent all the way out here to hopefully die, so she wouldn\'t have a chance to ruin her family\'s plans for inheritance. Although she was disappointed in her family, and quite frankly said heartbroken, she had gotten over it by now.

Her current goal was to turn her situation around, and most importantly just survive.

"Through reconnaissance, we have managed to figure out who the enemy commander is, as well as some information about him. You\'ll find it in the folder in front of you."

To everyone\'s pleasant surprise, their reconnaissance unit had gotten some unexpectedly good results this time around, and after reading the report, everyone had some meaningful looks on their faces. The enemy commander was called Og\'drin, or as his own soldiers called him in secret, Og\'drin the cowardly.

Og\'drin was a fire imp mage, imps were known for their talent in sorcery, and because of their small stature, it was impossible for them to become knights.

For Og\'drin, his small stature was his greatest insecurity, and he had formed an inferiority complex over time. Because of his talent for magic as well as his rather powerful family, he had been assigned as a commander of this small army. Normally this would be a source of pride for a demon, but Og\'drin just wanted this battle to be over with as fast as possible.

He had no interest in this war, and he definitely didn\'t care for the life of his commoner soldiers.

This personality of his was the demon army\'s greatest weakness. After reading through the report, everyone started rapidly forming their own thoughts and ideas on the matter. Erin had originally been pretty despondent about the whole situation, but after reading through the report, she started smiling. This was the perfect opportunity for her to show her worth.

Although she could be considered the commander of an army, her position was less than satisfactory.

The battlefield she was stationed at was not that important, but if she made great contributions, she might get promoted to a better position. Since she was a talented mage, she had already started forming a plan in her mind, a plan that would make sure that she would get out of here if it succeeded.

...

A day quickly passed, and both armies were beginning to grow restless. Og\'drin didn\'t really care for his soldiers\' petty pride and he was quickly getting bored. Although he was from a rather noble lineage, he had never really learned about strategy, since he thought it was boring. Just sitting around this frozen wasteland was not really his style, so he decided to attack at the break of dawn.

Although he knew that his soldiers would be angry at him, he couldn\'t care less about their opinions. When his subordinates heard about his plans to attack, they were visibly shaken, but they still decided to flatter him as much as possible. Although they knew that attacking first would impact their morale, they knew what would happen to them if they decided to argue against Og\'drin\'s opinion.

It would be far from pretty.

The order was quickly relayed to every squad leader who then relayed it to their squadmates. A lot of discontents arose, but there was nothing that could be done. No one really cared about this battlefield anyways, if they chased their commander away, they would all pretty much be dead, whether it produced results or not wasn\'t important.

On the human\'s side, preparations were in full swing for what was to come. Every single mage in the camp was working together to create a massive magic circle. Normally they would never do something like this since the enemy\'s reconnaissance would be able to see what they were doing, and promptly counter it.

That would mean a massive waste of resources and time, something they didn\'t have much of on a battlefield.

Luckily for the humans, the demons\' commander was incompetent, and as a result, they had full control of all the information on the battlefield. Since they had no worries about being discovered, they could use such a risky plan without getting caught. In the commander\'s tent, Erin was currently reading through a report with a gleam in her eye.

According to the report, the demons were starting to grow restless and were showing signs of movement.

Erin was confident that her plan was going to work out, but she still had to be cautious. Their plan hinged on their enemy\'s incompetence. If it turned out that their enemy wasn\'t as incompetent as planned, the battle was going to become a lot harder. As soon as the break of dawn arrived, the demons who had been restless began their assault.

Their strategy was as straightforward as it could get, they were just going to attack straight from the front.

Their numbers were a bit higher than their human counterparts, which is why they could go into this battle with confidence. Since their commander ordered them to attack, he had to be certain that the humans had nothing in store for them. To their dismay, their confidence was shattered as soon as the battle started.

A large magic circle was activated by the human mages that concentrated all of the light from the sun and directly enhanced it with light magic. The light was then directed at the demons army before exploding out like a flashbang. Naturally a magic circle like this couldn\'t be compared to the power of a flashbang, but the principle was the same.

The light from this magic circle could make almost anyone momentarily blind for a few minutes, the weaker demons were even blinded completely.

From there on out, the battle turned into a complete slaughter. The demons had no means to fight back as they were killed one by one. This was the start of Erin Ward\'s rise to fame.
